The Case Against Lukewarm

The Case Against Lukewarm

Nobody has ever come home and said, ‘You will not believe how moderately that went.’

Think about the best stories you tell. The trail that was twice as long as the sign claimed. The chili that made a grown man take off his hat. The lake in April. Not one of them begins with ‘conditions were pleasant and we felt fine.’

That is the whole argument for this website, and also the reason your family has started hiding the headlamps.

Lukewarm is a decision, too

Most of us did not choose the middle. It chose us, one small default at a time. Sixty-eight on the thermostat. Medium salsa. The paved loop. The same three walks. There is nothing wrong with any of it, but it does not ask much of you, and it does not give much back.

Picking a side is not about being reckless. It is about being on purpose. A hard, cold, early start is on purpose. So is a three-hour nap with the phone in another room. Both beat the gray afternoon where you half-do chores and half-watch a show you do not like.

How to pick a side this week

  1. Choose one hot and one cold. One thing that makes you sweat, one thing that makes you say a word you would not say in front of your mother. A hard hike and a cold shower will do.
  2. Put it on the calendar. Extremes do not happen by accident. Accidents happen by accident.
  3. Make the rest boring on purpose. The trick nobody tells you: all-or-nothing people are very good at the nothing. Protect it.
  4. Tell someone the plan. Doing something big means somebody should know where you went and when you will be back.

The fine print

None of this means ignoring your body, the weather, or common sense. Real extremes respect real limits. The people who do this for decades are the most careful people you will ever meet. They just aim that care at something worth doing.

If you want a reminder, we put the motto on a heavyweight tee. If you would like a longer read first, try our plan for a two-speed weekend. Either way, finish your coffee. It is getting cold, and not in the good way.
